Amazwi South African Museum of Literature hosted the Makana Football Robben Island International Commemoration Lecture today in Makhanda. The event celebrated 59 years of Makana Football and brought together sports icons, supporters and local leaders. The program emphasized football’s legacy and its power to build unity and opportunity.
What Happened?
The lecture drew a strong audience as football legend Doctor “16V” Khumalo delivered the keynote address. He reflected on how sport continues to break barriers and shape communities, particularly in areas with deep historical ties to the game.
The program also featured Uncool Tea, Mama Joy, and Tebogo Mphahlele (Ms Mamelodi Sundowns), who emphasized the rise of women’s football and its growing impact across the country.
Mr Thato Victor Monaheng received a certificate of recognition for his foundational role in the Makana Local Football Association. His contribution was celebrated as a cornerstone of local football development.
Official Response
The Sarah Baartman District Municipality (SBDM) supported the commemoration as part of its continued investment in sport tourism and local economic growth. Officials noted that consistent backing for high-impact sporting events strengthens community pride and draws visitors into the district.
SBDM emphasized its previous support for the New Year’s Cup and Easter Tournament, adding that this latest partnership encourages further private sector involvement in grassroots sport.
