South Africa has launched a new visa platform to fast-track permits for international film and creative production companies, with turnaround times as short as 24 hours.
What is the STAGES visa system?
The Screen Talent and Global Entertainment Scheme (STAGES) is a digital platform that simplifies and speeds up visa applications for global film, TV and creative projects.
Instead of weeks-long delays, production companies can now apply entirely online. The Department of Home Affairs says the new system removes red tape and positions South Africa as a top global filming destination.
“We are turning Home Affairs into an economic enabler,” said Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Leon Schreiber.
STAGES is modelled on the successful Trusted Employer Scheme (TES) and the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS). It includes:
- A secure online visa platform
- 24-hour processing turnaround
- A dedicated adjudication team
- Strict governance and compliance agreements
Who can apply and how?
International creative companies with a proven track record can submit their interest via the Department of Home Affairs portal:
Applicants will need to sign an agreement with Home Affairs to regulate participation and ensure compliance. The government gazette outlining the scheme is now officially published.
Why STAGES matters for South Africa
For years, visa delays have cost South Africa lucrative international productions. In one recent case, a R400 million Netflix project relocated to Mexico due to bureaucratic difficulties.
Minister Schreiber says STAGES forms part of a broader push to turn Home Affairs into a driver of economic growth.
“The creative industry is now seeing the benefits of our digital reforms,” he said.
He added that the platform supports the Government of National Unity’s top priority — growing the economy and creating jobs — while showcasing South Africa’s world-class production infrastructure.
