Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala will spend the New Year behind bars after being denied bail in his ongoing attempted murder case involving the 2023 shooting of his ex-girlfriend. His trial, along with four co-accused, is set to begin in late January 2026 at the Johannesburg High Court of South Africa, Gauteng Division.
What Happened
Matlala appeared in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court with co-accused Musa Kekana, Tiego Floyd Mabusela, Zandile Nthabiseng Nzama, and his wife, Tsakane Matlala.
The five face 25 criminal charges, including 11 counts of attempted murder, linked to three separate shootings that took place between August 2022 and January 2024.
Due to the seriousness of the offences, the case has been transferred to the Johannesburg High Court, where the trial will begin in January 2026.
Official Response
According to the State, Matlala and his co-accused not only took part in violent shootings but also laundered over R120 000 connected to an alleged murder plot.
Prosecutors allege that the group submitted a fraudulent invoice in an effort to conceal the source of the funds and mislead the court.
“Given the seriousness of the charges, the matter rightly belongs before the High Court,” a State representative said.
Authorities added that Matlala’s bail denial was based on the severity of the allegations and the risk of interference with witnesses.
Community Impact
The case has captured public attention in Alexandra and nearby communities, where concerns over gun violence and organized crime remain high.
Local leaders have urged residents to let the justice system take its course and have called for stronger community safety measures.
“We just want justice for the victims and peace in our community,” said one resident outside the courthouse.
The public has welcomed the court’s decision to deny bail, viewing it as a step toward accountability.
