The Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality has officially introduced Bonati Construction Works (Pty) Ltd as the appointed service provider for the 2.5 km medium-voltage line upgrade along Jackson Street in KwaMaqoma. The project, launched on 11 November 2025, is designed to enhance electricity reliability for Wards 19 and 20.
What Happened
Residents of Jackson Street gathered as municipal officials unveiled plans to modernize the aging medium-voltage (MV) infrastructure. The upgrade comes as part of Raymond Mhlaba Municipality’s broader initiative to boost energy stability, safety, and grid capacity across rural and semi-urban areas.
The project addresses long-standing issues such as voltage drops, limited load capacity, and power interruptions that have become common due to aging electrical systems.
“This project is a major step toward reliable power supply for our communities. We are investing in infrastructure that supports both residents and local economic growth,” said a Raymond Mhlaba spokesperson during the community briefing.
Official Response
Municipal officials emphasized that Bonati Construction Works was selected based on its proven track record in electrical infrastructure development. The project is expected to run in phases, ensuring minimal disruption to existing power supply during construction.
The municipality further confirmed that the 2.5 km MV line will meet modern efficiency standards, making it more resilient against environmental wear and technical faults.
Community Impact
For KwaMaqoma residents, the upgrade brings renewed hope for improved living conditions and business operations. Stable electricity will enhance safety, support small enterprises, and strengthen service delivery in key sectors like education and healthcare.
Community leaders welcomed the project, noting that consistent power will reduce costs for generators and promote investment in local enterprises.
