A 21-year-old suspect was fatally shot during a confrontation with police at Nothintsila Location, Ngqeleni, on Monday, 10 November 2025. Police had been tracking suspects linked to an armed robbery at a nature reserve near Mthatha, where several firearms were stolen.
According to police reports, members of the Tactical Response Team approached the targeted homestead with the intent to make arrests. Before they could enter, they came under heavy gunfire from the suspects. Officers returned fire, killing one suspect while others escaped into nearby bushes.
As officers processed the scene, gunshots were again fired from the surrounding area in an apparent attempt to intimidate police.
Official Response
Police recovered a 9mm NP 20 Parabellum pistol and live ammunition at the scene. A case of attempted murder and an inquest docket were opened. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has taken over the investigation to ensure transparency and accountability.
In a statement, the South African Police Service (SAPS) reaffirmed its stance on combating violent crime. “We will never retreat in our duty to protect communities. More tactical operations will be carried out to restore safety,” reaffirmed SAPS in statement.
Community Impact
The shootout has sparked concerns among residents about rising gun violence in rural areas. Community members have been urged to share information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects.
