Walter Sisulu University’s Centre for Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator (CfERI), in collaboration with the Procurement Department, launched a two-month Safety Management System training on 11 November 2025 at Zamukulungisa Site. The programme focuses on promoting occupational health and safety (OHS) awareness among suppliers to align with national compliance standards.
What Happened
The safety sessions form part of WSU’s effort to build a strong culture of compliance and accountability within its supplier network. They follow a series of site visits conducted earlier this year 2025, which identified gaps in workplace safety and risk management.
The training aims to equip suppliers with the skills to recognise, evaluate, and manage hazards in the workplace effectively.
Official Response
Health and Safety Facilitator and CEO of Global Sustainable Risk Control Holdings, Mr. Alfred Sibeko, led the first session. He stressed the importance of proactive risk management in maintaining a safe and productive environment.
“Risk management is a process of hazard identification measuring the level of exposure, and controlling the risk,” said Sibeko.
He explained that strengthening occupational health practices reduces injuries, improves efficiency, and fosters responsible business operations.
Community Impact
The initiative is expected to benefit both WSU and its extended network of suppliers. By promoting national OHS compliance, the university aims to reduce workplace hazards and ensure that all contracted partners meet the necessary safety standards.
CfERI’s proactive approach supports the university’s vision of building sustainable enterprises that uphold ethical and safety practices.
