The OR Tambo District Task Team and the Stock Theft Prevention Task Team recovered two unlicensed firearms in separate operations in Mthatha. They arrested two male suspects, aged 47 and 63, during ongoing efforts to stop the circulation of illegal weapons in the district.
What Happened
In the first incident on 09 November 2025, officers arrested a 63-year-old man from Gaduka locality in Upper Ncise A/A. He allegedly carried an unlicensed 9mm pistol with an erased serial number and seven rounds of live ammunition.
In a separate operation on 10 November 2025, the District Task Team acted on intelligence and arrested a 47-year-old man from Silverton (KwaStwayi). Officers found him with a 9mm pistol with an intact serial number and seven rounds of ammunition. Investigators traced the gun to a Durban-based owner who never reported it stolen.
Official Response
Police said the arrests form part of district-wide efforts to remove unlicensed firearms linked to robberies, assaults, and stock theft cases. They noted that intelligence-driven patrols will continue across hotspot areas.
Community Impact
Residents have raised concerns about rising gun-related incidents in rural villages. Police believe these recoveries will help prevent further violence and boost safety in affected communities. Both suspects will appear in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on charges of unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
