On November 10, 2025, the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality gathered residents at Lunganako Country Lodge in Zikhuba, Ward 23. The event focused on equipping the community with practical tools and knowledge to improve cleanliness and sustainable waste management.
What Happened
The municipality hosted a community empowerment workshop under the theme “Kufundiswe ngeendlela zokuphucula ucoceko ekuhlaleni” (Learning Ways to Improve Community Cleanliness). The session aimed to educate residents about proper hygiene practices and inspire everyone to take responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.
Representatives from the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) introduced the SALGA Waste Management App. The app allows users to report waste issues directly to their local municipalities and access educational materials on recycling, waste reduction, and sanitation.
Official Response
Ward Councillor M. Msindo expressed deep gratitude to SALGA and all participants for making the initiative a success.
“We truly appreciate SALGA’s effort in empowering our people,” said Councillor Msindo. “I hope those who attended will go back and teach others in their communities, spreading awareness and responsibility for a cleaner environment.”
Municipal officials also noted that this training marks the beginning of a series of community-driven clean-up campaigns scheduled across different wards before the end of the year.
Community Impact
Residents welcomed the initiative, saying it provides them with the right tools to protect their environment and report issues faster. Many community members believe the app will make it easier to hold municipalities accountable for waste management.
The training has already inspired several local youth groups to plan clean-up drives in Zikhuba and neighboring villages. Organizers say continued education and collaboration are key to maintaining the momentum.
