A new farmer training programme led by Siphe Development and Capacitation Agency(SIDECA) and EMBO began in Port St Johns on 6 November 2025, giving small-scale farmers hands-on guidance to grow sustainable and profitable agricultural enterprises. The first session covered crop production planning, input sourcing, basic marketing, and livestock health management.
What Happened
The opening day delivered focused, practical lessons for emerging farmers. Trainers guided participants through crop-planning methods, showing how to align production with local demand. They also explained how to source inputs responsibly and how to use simple marketing strategies to improve sales. Moreover, facilitators spent time on record-keeping, stressing its importance for growth and accountability. In addition, farmers received targeted training on animal-disease management. They learned how to identify early symptoms, prevent outbreaks, and respond quickly when livestock fall ill.
One farmer said the session offered “real solutions we can apply on our fields tomorrow.”
Official Response
Programme facilitators said the turnout reflected strong interest from rural growers. They noted that the training aims to build confidence while improving long-term productivity. “Our goal is to equip farmers with skills that sustain them. We want every participant to leave with tools they can use immediately,” a trainer explained.
Organisers confirmed the programme will continue tomorrow with more advanced modules.
Community Impact
Local farmers welcomed the initiative. They said the skills gained will help them strengthen food production, reduce losses, and improve income streams. Community members also expressed hope that the programme will boost local agribusiness activity and improve household food security.
