On 10 November 2025, the South African government renewed its call for citizens to help build a nation free from Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing new laws, supporting survivors, and holding perpetrators accountable.
What Happened
Government officials commemorated the day with a strong message of unity and responsibility. Citizens were urged to work with the police, prosecutors, and courts to ensure justice for victims of GBVF. The call forms part of the National Strategic Plan on GBVF, a long-term initiative aimed at preventing violence and strengthening the justice system.
Official Response
As part of legislative reforms, three critical laws were passed to enhance South Africa’s fight against GBVF.
The Criminal and Related Matters Amendment Act improves court procedures to protect vulnerable groups and reduce secondary victimisation.
The Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act also expands the National Register for Sex Offenders to include all offenders against children and people with mental disabilities.
Government further encourages men and boys to take an active role in promoting positive masculinity through community dialogues and awareness programmes.
Community Impact
The Takuwani Riime Programme, meaning “Let Us Stand Up Together”, continues to mobilise men to lead in challenging harmful social norms and promoting gender equality.
Citizens are urged to report GBVF at their nearest police station or call the Crime Stop number 08600 10111. For counselling and support, the Command Centre is available at 0800 428 428.
