On 6 November 2025, the Democratic Alliance (DA) staged a protest outside the Eastern Cape Education Department’s Mdantsane office. Party leaders submitted a memorandum calling for urgent action against corruption at Ulwazi High School and other affected schools. The DA also gave Education MEC Fundile Gade seven days to respond.
What Happened
DA leaders Horatio Hendricks MPL, Yusuf Cassim MPL, Marlene Ewers MPL, and Leander Kruger MPL led the demonstration. They said corruption is stripping learners of meals, textbooks, and vital opportunities. The group called for immediate interventions to stop officials who allegedly benefit from funds meant for school support.
The memorandum outlines several concerns and urges the department to hold individuals accountable. The DA wants transparent investigations and stronger oversight in school feeding, procurement, and resource distribution.
Official Response
DA leaders said the situation can no longer continue. “Learners are being robbed while corrupt officials enrich themselves. This must stop,” one MPL said.
The party insisted that the department must act within seven days or face further demands for accountability. The Education Department had not issued a formal response at the time of publication.
Community Impact
Parents and learners have raised concerns about missing food, delayed textbooks, and poor school resources. The DA believes stronger oversight will protect learners and improve education outcomes. The protest also showed growing public frustration with corruption in the education system. Community members expressed hope that the memorandum will trigger action.
