Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality handed over the rebuilt Matanzima Bridge on 6 November 2025 in Ward 44 KwaNobuhle, Kariega. . The ceremony marked an important milestone in the Metro’s flood-recovery programme. Residents gathered to celebrate improved access, safety, and restored mobility.

What Happened

Ward 44 Councillor Luzuko Ndamse welcomed the community and described the handover as a moment of renewal. He said the bridge represents progress after months of hardship.

Acting Executive Director for Infrastructure and Engineering, Barry Martin, explained how recent floods caused widespread damage and disrupted daily life across the Metro. He noted that KwaNobuhle was among the worst-affected areas. The municipality responded quickly to stabilise damaged infrastructure and restore essential services. Martin also thanked all stakeholders who worked together to complete the project.

Official Response

Municipal leadership said the bridge shows the Metro’s commitment to rebuilding infrastructure.
“This is more than a structure. It is proof that we stand with our communities in times of crisis,” an official said.

They also urged residents to protect public infrastructure and continue working with the municipality during recovery efforts.

Community Impact

The new bridge will improve access for residents, reduce travel disruptions, and support emergency response. It also boosts mobility for workers, learners, and businesses that rely on the route. Community members said the project brings relief and restores confidence in the Metro’s ability to respond to disasters. The handover forms part of ongoing efforts to build safer and more resilient neighbourhoods.
