Intensified #SaferFestiveSeason operations in the OR Tambo District led to the arrest of a 34-year-old man. He was found with an unlicensed firearm, ammunition, and drugs. The Mthatha-based OR Tambo District Task Team carried out the operation at Moyeni locality, Marubeni Administrative Area, Libode, on 5 November 2025.
What Happened
Police acted swiftly after receiving intelligence about a suspect believed to be involved in drug dealing and illegal firearm possession in the area. Officers found an unlicensed AK-47 assault rifle, several rounds of ammunition, and packets of dagga and Tik. They also recovered an undisclosed amount of cash, believed to be proceeds from drug-related activities.
The suspect failed to produce a valid firearm license and was immediately arrested. The seized firearm and drugs were taken for further forensic and ballistic analysis to determine possible links to other crimes in the region.
Official Response
Police commended the swift action by the OR Tambo District Task Team. “This arrest demonstrates our ongoing commitment to removing illegal firearms and drugs from our communities as part of the Safer Festive Season operations,” said a police spokesperson.
The suspect will appear before the Libode Magistrate’s Court on 6 November 2025. He faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and possession and dealing in drugs.
