Government officials, parents, and learners gathered in Mount Fletcher on 3 November 2025 for the official opening of Matshaneng Senior Primary School (SPS). The event was led by Eastern Cape MEC for Education, Fundile Gade. He said the launch marked a proud step toward improving school infrastructure in rural areas.

What Happened

The ceremony took place in Sathube Village, under the scenic Thabagubedu Mountains in the Joe Gqabi District. The newly built Matshaneng SPS, valued at R70 million, was officially opened and handed over to the community.

The school features modern classrooms, science and technology rooms, a kitchen, sports fields, and a children’s play area with swings and slides.

Official Response

Speaking during the handover, MEC Gade urged teachers and residents to protect and maintain the new facility. “We encourage teachers and the community to take care of this school so that future generations can benefit,” he said.

School principal Mme Mabuyka Ranthamane and the school governing body pledged to keep the school in excellent condition and ensure it serves learners well.

Community Impact

At least twenty elderly men and women were honoured during the event and received warm blankets from MEC Gade. The celebration ended with a birthday cake for the MEC, whose birthday falls this month.
