The Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality (WMMLM) hosted the annual OR Tambo Children’s Legacy Programme at the Bizana Civic Centre, bringing together learners, educators, and government partners to celebrate the life and values of Oliver Reginald Tambo.
The event showcased the talents of local schools through poetry, book reviews, and oral presentations, emphasizing the spirit of leadership, discipline, and community that OR Tambo embodied.
What Happened
The programme, organised by WMMLM in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Museum, Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC), Department of Education, Old Mutual, and the Tambo family, celebrated education and creativity.
Mr. Noconjo, WMMLM’s Manager for Special Programmes, opened the event, while Mr. B. Mahlangu, Senior Manager for Heritage and Conservation at the Nelson Mandela Museum, outlined the purpose of the day.
Noconjo encouraged young people to “carry OR Tambo’s legacy through discipline, integrity, and service to others.”
Learners from schools including Nyanisweni SSS, Majavu SSS, Mzamba CHS, Ntukayi SSS, and Bizana Village SSS participated in cultural and academic competitions. The programme featured praise singing, book reviews, and essay presentations, creating a lively, empowering atmosphere.

Winners received medals and trophies from representatives of the Nelson Mandela Museum, DSRAC, Department of Education, and Old Mutual.
Official Response
Mr. Simphiwe Magini from the Alfred Nzo District delivered the vote of thanks, commending the effort of all schools and partners.
He praised the programme for nurturing confidence and cultural pride among young people.
“Through these programmes, we keep OR Tambo’s values alive in the next generation — values of discipline, leadership, and love for one’s community,” said Mr. Magini.
Municipal officials described the event as a key part of youth empowerment, linking education with creativity and civic awareness.
