The Alfred Nzo District Municipality (ANDM), in partnership with the Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC), will host the ‘Umzila ka Tambo Marathon, 26 October 2025, in the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality. The event celebrates the enduring legacy of Oliver Reginald Tambo, one of South Africa’s greatest liberation leaders.
The annual Umzila ka Tambo Marathon forms part of the province’s heritage and sports calendar, designed to honour OR Tambo’s life and his unwavering contribution to freedom, unity, and education.
This year’s marathon will attract runners from across the Eastern Cape and neighbouring provinces, offering different race categories for professional athletes and community participants. The event route will trace areas of historical significance tied to Tambo’s life and activism, blending athleticism with cultural remembrance.
Official Response
The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture hailed the initiative as a key event promoting both health and heritage.
“Oliver Tambo’s legacy represents perseverance and leadership qualities we aim to instil through sport,” said a DSRAC official.
The department confirmed that safety measures, hydration points, and medical support will be available throughout the event. Local law enforcement agencies will also assist with traffic control to ensure smooth proceedings.
Community Impact
Residents of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Municipality have welcomed the marathon, viewing it as both a tourism boost and a platform for youth development. Local small businesses, especially food vendors and accommodation providers, expect increased activity during the event.
Community groups have also joined preparations, helping clean and mark the route, while local schools plan to cheer on runners along the marathon’s path.
