On 16 October 2025, three men were arrested after police discovered 26 suspected stolen goats, including two dead ones, inside a Toyota Quantum on the N14 road between Ventersdorp and Coligny, in North West. The suspects, Melton Francous Mapsanganhe (35), Boa Camaroes Koza (39), and Aobake Johnson Gwayisa (23) appeared before the Ventersdorp Magistrate’s Court on 20 October 2025 and were remanded in custody until 27 October 2025.
What Happened
Traffic officers were conducting routine patrols when they stopped a Toyota Quantum that appeared suspicious. Upon inspection, they found 26 goats inside the vehicle, two of which were already dead. Officers also discovered clothing and other suspected stolen property.
The men failed to account for the livestock, prompting their immediate arrest. The goats were confirmed to have been stolen, and the vehicle was seized for further investigation.
Official Response
Authorities praised the alertness of traffic officers for their swift action. Law enforcement agencies said the arrests shows ongoing efforts to curb stock theft, which remains a growing concern in rural communities. The South African Police Service (SAPS) encouraged residents to report any suspicious livestock movements and continue working with local policing units to protect farmers’ livelihoods.
Community Impact
Local farmers have welcomed the arrests, saying stock theft continues to threaten their income and food security. Many expressed hope that stronger patrols and community vigilance will help deter such crimes. Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that more arrests could follow as they trace the origin of the stolen animals.
