In less than a year, Walter Sisulu University’s Alumni Relations Office has become a hub for innovation and empowerment. By fostering collaboration between students and alumni, the office supports entrepreneurship and social impact, reinforcing WSU’s vision for transformation.
Their Story
Since its launch, the Alumni Relations Office at WSU has focused on more than just keeping alumni connected. Deputy Director Sandiso Mbongo explains their mission is to create real social and economic change. They do this by mentoring emerging entrepreneurs and promoting collaboration across the university.
One standout event was the Entrepreneurship Competition Day at WSU’s Buffalo City Campus, Potsdam Site. This event gathered alumni and student entrepreneurs who pitched business ideas to judges and peers. The competition awarded R50,000 in cash prizes, providing crucial support for new ventures.
The Event/Occasion
The Entrepreneurship Competition Day presented creativity and enterprise among the WSU community. Participants refined their ideas, gained exposure, and received mentorship all critical for turning concepts into sustainable businesses.
Mbongo outlines the importance of preparing students and alumni for a rapidly changing world. “We must think ahead and design interventions that support entrepreneurs who need multifaceted assistance,” he says.
Community Reactions
The office is committed to fostering a culture of social justice, innovation, and impact. Ideas generated through competitions don’t end there. Instead, they flow into the Centre for Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator (CERI) at WSU.
Here, participants receive skills development to turn ideas into viable businesses. This effort links past and present generations, encouraging lifelong learning and economic participation.
