Walter Sisulu University (WSU) opened the 3rd National South African Humanities Deans Association (SAHUDA) Conference 2025 at its Zamukulungisa campus in Mthatha on 22 October 2025. The event gathered scholars and researchers from across South Africa to discuss the theme “Re-Imagining the Humanities in the 21st Century for Impact and Excellence.”

“In an epoch of deepening inequality and ecological crisis, the humanities challenge us to think critically and act justly, they allow us to see the world not only through data but also through empathy and narrative, the essence of human understanding,” said Professor Songca.

The three-day conference will explore six major subthemes:
The conference will explore key themes such as digital humanities, social justice, interdisciplinary innovation, future education, cultural heritage, and ethics in the human condition. These discussions aim to reposition the humanities as central to addressing modern challenges and inspiring excellence in higher education.
