The Mbhashe Local Municipality, through its Special Programmes Unit (SPU), hosted an HIV & AIDS awareness and exam prayer session at Nobangile Senior Secondary School in Ward 32, Gusi Administrative Area on 21 October 2025. The event aimed to offer Grade 12 learners emotional and spiritual support as they begin their final exams, while also raising vital awareness about HIV & AIDS in the community.

What Happened
The session, chaired by Councillor Celiwe Genyane, brought together learners, educators, parents, and various government stakeholders. Among the attendees were representatives from the Departments of Social Development, Health, and Education, SAPS, SADTU, local councillors, School Governing Body members, and community members.
Principal Zulungile Makayi opened the event by welcoming guests and spoke about the importance of such initiatives in preparing learners mentally and emotionally for their exams.
A key feature of the programme was the recognition of top-performing learners, who were applauded for their achievements and encouraged to keep striving for academic success.
Official Response
Council Speaker Babalwa Majava and Councillor Fikiswa Ndaule, who is the Portfolio Head for Governance and Public Participation, delivered motivational messages to the learners.
“You must stay focused and support one another. Avoid distractions and keep your eyes on your goals,” urged Councillor Ndaule.
Their messages stressed the importance of community, discipline, and determination during the examination period.
Community Impact
The event was not only about exams. It also served as a platform to promote dialogue around HIV & AIDS awareness, a continued health priority in rural communities like Gusi.
Parents, councillors, and health stakeholders joined in voicing their support for such initiatives, which blend education with emotional and social wellness.
The programme ended with warm words of encouragement from the community and municipality to all Grade 12 learners.
