The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has officially inducted its newly appointed Regional Executive Managers (REMs) to align them with the agency’s strategic priorities and service-delivery goals. The induction took place on Tuesday, 14 October 2025, in Pretoria.
Mmapula Pheeha, Nkele Ntlhe and Karabelo Mojanaga have been appointed to lead the Limpopo, Free State and Northern Cape regions respectively, following Cabinet concurrence last month. Their appointment fills long-vacant senior positions in the social development sector — a commitment made by Social Development Minister Sisisi Tolashe.
SASSA CEO Themba Matlou welcomed the new REMs, outlining the agency’s mandate, key focus areas, and expectations. He emphasised the importance of strong regional oversight and regular engagement with local offices to improve accountability and efficiency.
“SASSA is committed to excellence, using advanced technology and expert staff to deliver reliable social security services that improve lives and empower communities,” said Matlou.
“I want leaders who empower and develop people, who listen and respect others. You cannot be a leader if you don’t respect people.”
Matlou further urged managers to promote supportive, not authoritarian, leadership.
“You don’t demonstrate leadership by bullying people. We don’t want leaders who fail to inspire or support staff — otherwise the region will collapse to the detriment of the vulnerable people we serve,” he said.
The CEO concluded by expressing appreciation to the executive management team, noting that the permanent appointment of REMs will enhance efficiency, service delivery, and public confidence in SASSA.
