On 15 October 2025, Ndzondelelo High School in Zwide, Gqeberha, was officially selected to lead disaster awareness and education initiatives as part of the 2025 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) legacy projects. The initiative recognises the school’s commitment to education, discipline, and environmental sustainability within the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality.
What Happened
The announcement emphasises Ndzondelelo High School’s strong record of academic and sporting success, as well as its active Eco-Club. The school attracts learners from across the Metro and continues to serve as a model of excellence in both academics and leadership.
A major project planned under the legacy programme involves transforming a nearby landfill into a vegetable garden. This effort will not only improve the local environment but also serve as a learning hub for disaster management education and sustainable practices.
Official Response
MMC for Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality, Councillor Luyanda Lewu, praised the school for its leadership and commitment to environmental stewardship. “Ndzondelelo Secondary School was chosen for this IDDR Build-Up programme because of your dedication and the active participation of your Eco-Club,” said Councillor Lewu.
“Your team’s involvement in tree planting and environmental projects will inspire others and help foster a culture of resilience.”
Lewu added that the municipality aims to replicate this model in other schools across the Metro to promote community-based disaster awareness.
Community Impact
The legacy project supports the national vision for risk-aware and climate-resilient communities. By turning waste into productivity, the school’s initiative demonstrates how youth can drive environmental change and strengthen disaster preparedness at a local level.
In addition, the project will help learners gain practical skills in agriculture, sustainability, and disaster management, creating a long-term educational benefit for both the school and the community.
