The Department of Agriculture, in partnership with the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) and private sector experts, has concluded a three-day practical feedlot management workshop at Mdeni Feedlot in Kumkani Mhlontlo Local Municipality, OR Tambo District. The training, which ended on 15 October 2025, equipped 45 farmers from Alfred Nzo District Municipality, King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality, and Kumkani Mhlontlo Local Municipality with hands-on skills to boost red meat production.
What Happened
The workshop formed part of the Department’s Red Meat Commercialisation Strategy aimed at developing emerging and small-scale farmers. Participants received practical lessons on feed types, animal nutrition, growth implants, and market readiness. Farmers were also awarded certificates of attendance for their commitment and successful completion of the training.

Official Response
The Department of Agriculture applauded the 45 participants for their dedication to improving livestock production. “This training empowers farmers to run sustainable and profitable feedlot operations,” an official said, adding that such initiatives will help expand the province’s red meat industry.
Community Impact
Certificate recipient Mr Mongameli Bhisho Sulenkama said the workshop helped him correct previous farming mistakes. Another participant, Ms Zimkhitha Magumtha, described the training as highly informative and urged young people to invest in agriculture.
