On 9 October 2025, the Umzimvubu Local Municipality officially handed over a completed electricity project to residents of Ntelezini Village in Ward 20. A total of 149 households were successfully connected to the power grid, bringing light and joy to families who had waited years for electrification.
What Happened
The official switch-on ceremony signified a major milestone in the municipality’s rural electrification drive. Local residents gathered in high spirits to celebrate the occasion and express their appreciation. Ward councillors, municipal officials, and community members witnessed the activation of power across homes in the area. For many, it was the first time they experienced electricity in their households.
Moyar Inga Nodali, who officiated as Mayor of the Day, said the event represented a promise fulfilled.
“It is a great joy for us as the Umzimvubu Municipality to hand over this electricity project today. A total of 149 households have been connected, and residents are overjoyed because they have waited a long time for this moment,” she said.
Official Response
Municipal representatives thanked the community for their patience and support throughout the implementation phase. They also commended the technical team for completing the project on schedule and ensuring that safety standards were met.
Furthermore, officials confirmed that more villages within Ward 20 and surrounding areas are next in line for electrification. The municipality continues to prioritise access to basic services such as power, water, and sanitation as part of its service delivery plan for the 2025/26 financial year.
Community Impact
The electrification project has already improved living conditions in Ntelezini. Residents can now use electric lighting, charge devices, and connect household appliances. Local entrepreneurs also expressed excitement about new business opportunities that will arise from having a reliable power supply.
“Electricity will help us start small shops and grow our businesses,” said one community member.
