On 9 October 2025, the Nyandeni Local Municipality hosted a Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM) programme in Gxulu Village, Ward 29. The event formed part of the Heritage and Culture Month celebrations. It focused on reviving Ubuntu, fighting gender-based violence, and discouraging drug abuse. The programme also raised awareness about the dangers of illegal initiation practices among young boys.
What Happened
The gathering brought together community members, local leaders, and several partner institutions, including the South African Council of Churches (SACC), South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), the Department of Land Reform and Rural Development, Law Enforcement, and the Women Support Centre.
Speakers encouraged residents to uphold moral values and community unity as part of building a safer and more caring society. Traditional leaders also called for stronger family involvement in guiding youth and protecting cultural integrity.
Official Response
Municipal representatives said the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen social cohesion and moral accountability in local communities.
“We must go back to our roots of respect, compassion, and discipline. Reviving Ubuntu is the foundation of restoring dignity and peace in our society,” said one Nyandeni official.
Partners like SASSA and SACC reaffirmed their commitment to supporting local programmes that address social behaviour, family stability, and crime prevention.
Community Impact
Residents praised the programme for opening dialogue around critical moral and social challenges. Many expressed that the engagement reminded them of the importance of working together to raise responsible young people and protect community values.
The Women Support Centre also used the platform to encourage victims of abuse to speak out and seek help through available support systems.
