Violent student protests at the University of Fort Hare escalated, resulting in arrests, building fires, and one reported injury. South Africa Police Service (SAPS) has responded with increased visibility to stabilise the tense situation on campus.
What Happened
The unrest began early Monday, 6 October 2025, around 04h00, when students launched a protest at the Alice campus. By Tuesday, police arrested eight suspects aged between 22 and 33 for public violence and business burglary. They appeared before the Alice Magistrate Court and are expected back in court on 26 November 2025.
On Wednesday, 8 October, around 16h30, tensions worsened as protestors set fire to several university buildings, including:
- Administration Block
- Student Centre
- Auditorium
- HIV Centre
Police used rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
One student was injured during Tuesday’s chaos after jumping over a bridge. He was transported to hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, four security officers were held hostage in a building but later rescued unharmed by police.
Official Response
SAPS has intensified its presence on the campus and says it will continue to monitor the situation closely.
“Police are intensifying visibility and will not recline to maintain order and stabilize the situation,” the official statement read.
Authorities have not yet made arrests for arson or property damage. SAPS is urging anyone with information about the fires to contact Alice Police Station or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Anonymous tips can also be submitted via the #MySAPSApp.
Community Impact
The university community remains on edge as SAPS works to restore calm. While classes have not officially been suspended, the ongoing protests have disrupted academic and administrative operations.
Local residents have also expressed concern about safety near the campus, with fears of escalation if not contained.
