On the 9th of October 2025, Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane has expressed shock and sadness over the violent protests and destruction of property at the University of Fort Hare’s Alice Campus. Protesting students set fire to several campus buildings, including administrative offices, during the demonstrations. They also looted the Student Centre.
What Happened
The unrest began earlier in October as students protested against alleged management failures. Tensions escalated on 08 October 2025 night when fire gutted several key university buildings, including the Staff Centre and Administration Block. They also looted the Student Centre.
Official Response
Premier Mabuyane said he had engaged Higher Education Minister Buti Manamela, who deployed senior officials to work with the university to restore calm. “The destruction of property is unacceptable and could set back infrastructure development by another ten years,” he said. The Premier also invited church leaders and civil-society groups to mediate peace efforts on campus.
Community Impact
Local residents and students have called for urgent dialogue to end the chaos. Meanwhile, the Premier urged police to increase visibility and prevent further injuries or damage, adding that he wished a speedy recovery to those injured during the clashes.
