On the 6th of October 2025, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the EFF Student Command (EFFSC) issued a strong statement condemning the ongoing instability and student protests at the University of Fort Hare (UFH) in Alice. The demonstrations, which began earlier in the week, have drawn widespread attention to the poor living and learning conditions faced by both students and staff.
What Happened
Students at UFH have been protesting against alleged maladministration, corruption, and the poor state of campus infrastructure. The demonstrations, which began earlier in the week, have drawn widespread attention to the deteriorating living and learning conditions affecting students and staff.
The EFF and its student wing described the situation as “a result of management’s repression and failure to serve the purpose of transformation, development, and academic freedom.” They added that the unrest reflected deeper governance problems within public institutions of higher learning.
Official Response
In its statement, the EFF reaffirmed solidarity with the students and workers of Fort Hare. “The EFF stands firmly with the students and workers of UFH against ongoing exclusions, dismissals, poor infrastructure, and lack of basic services,” the party declared.
The statement also warned that leadership positions in universities must never be used for “personal or political favours” but should advance academic excellence and accountability.
Community Impact
The protests have disrupted academic activities and sparked renewed debate about the state of governance in public universities. Student groups are calling for immediate intervention from the Department of Higher Education and Training to address systemic issues.
Meanwhile, the EFF urged all stakeholders to prioritise transformation and restore stability at the historic institution, which has produced many of South Africa’s prominent leaders.
