The Joe Gqabi Economic Development Agency (JoGEDA), in collaboration with the Joe Gqabi District Municipality (JGDM), Absa South Africa, and Standard Bank South Africa, hosted the Women in Farming Awards today in Maletswai. The ceremony, themed “Celebrating Women Who Are Cultivating Change in Agriculture,” paid tribute to women driving progress in farming and rural development.

WHAT HAPPENED

The awards recognised excellence across farming sectors, highlighting innovation, leadership, and resilience. Five categories were awarded:

  • Outstanding Woman Farmer in Livestock – Andiswa Makhoba
  • Outstanding Woman Farmer in Agro-processing – Bukeka Buqwana
  • Outstanding Woman Farmer in Mixed Farming – Dintle Maphala
  • Outstanding Woman Farmer in Crop Production – Nosipho Vuthela
  • Outstanding Women-Led Cooperative – Agree Sontaba Cooperative

The event drew farmers, government representatives, and banking partners in a show of support for women’s central role in food security and rural livelihoods.

OFFICIAL RESPONSE

Delivering the keynote address, Acting JGDM Executive Mayor  Unathi Hlatuka praised women farmers for their resilience and innovation.

“Women are at the heart of agricultural growth and economic development. As a district, we are committed to investing more time, energy, and resources toward creating sustainable jobs,” she said.

Departments of Agriculture and Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) also joined as supporting partners, reinforcing the collective effort to strengthen local farming.

Community Impact

The recognition of women leaders in farming is expected to encourage broader participation of women in the agricultural economy, strengthening household food systems and promoting rural prosperity.
