On 23 September 2025, the O.R. Tambo District Municipality hosted a Disaster Risk Management Advisory Forum at Savoy Hotel in Mthatha to review past responses, strengthen strategies, and prepare for the upcoming summer season.
What Happened
The forum brought together municipal leaders, emergency services, and key stakeholders to evaluate how previous disasters were handled and where improvements are needed. Discussions focused on developing proactive strategies to reduce risks, prevent future crises, and build a coordinated disaster management plan for the district.
Official Response
Officials emphasised the importance of collaboration and readiness. “Our goal is to ensure that when disaster strikes, our people are safer, and our systems are stronger,” said a representative from the Disaster Management Unit. The municipality stressed that preparedness is not only about infrastructure but also about fostering a culture of resilience in communities.
Community Impact
With summer approaching, the initiative aims to reassure residents that the municipality is actively working to safeguard lives and property. Community members welcomed the plan, noting that past disasters, such as floods and storms, emphasized the urgent need for stronger coordination and quicker responses. The renewed strategies are expected to minimise risks and create safer conditions for all residents in the district.
