On the 16th of September 2025, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has recorded progress in its electrification programme, bringing power to the Gomora informal settlement in Kuyga, Ward 40. The initiative is part of the broader 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 electrification plan aimed at improving service delivery and restoring dignity to residents.

What Happened

The municipality’s Electricity & Energy directorate has rolled out connections in Gomora, giving residents of Ward 40 access to sustainable electricity. This step forms part of an ongoing effort to extend basic services to informal settlements across Nelson Mandela Bay.

Official Response

Municipal officials emphasised that the project shows their commitment to service delivery. “Electrification is more than infrastructure, it is about restoring dignity and ensuring that households are able to live safer and healthier lives,” said the municipality’s statement.

Community Impact

For the residents of Gomora, access to electricity means more than just lights; it ensures improved safety, better living conditions, and opportunities for small-scale economic activity. The electrification programme is also expected to support local development by creating a foundation for future service rollouts.
