On 15 September 2025, the African National Congress (ANC), led by its National Executive Committee (NEC), has convened all councillors from across the country for a mandatory roll call session at the Goldrush Dome, in FNB Stadium Johannesburg. The gathering is intended to review progress, strengthen accountability, and accelerate service delivery at municipal level.

What Happened

The ANC organised the roll call to bring together councillors from all provinces in a unified platform. The session focused on evaluating the work of municipalities, identifying service delivery gaps, and aligning efforts with national development priorities.

Party officials described the gathering as an important step in reinforcing the role of local government as the heartbeat of South Africa’s democracy, shaping daily life and driving local economies.

Official Response

In a statement, the NEC underscored the urgency of stronger municipalities:

“Local government must be responsive to citizens’ needs. Strengthening municipalities is central to achieving the goals of the National Development Plan 2030, Agenda 2063, and the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”

The ANC leadership emphasized that accountability will remain at the centre of councillors’ work going forward.

Community Impact

The mandatory session aims to improve governance at municipal level by ensuring councillors deliver tangible results in their communities. By reinforcing accountability, the ANC hopes to rebuild public trust in local government, enhance service delivery, and ensure municipalities play a central role in development.
