On 10 September 2025: The African National Congress (ANC) commemorated the 81st anniversary of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in Johannesburg, with a statement that celebrated its fearless history while urging today’s youth to continue shaping South Africa’s future.
Their Story
The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL), formed in 1944 by visionaries such as Anton Lembede, Nelson Mandela, and Oliver Tambo, was born out of a determination to challenge hesitation and conservatism within the ANC. With discipline, courage, and militancy, they declared that the youth would spearhead the fight for freedom. From its inception, the ANCYL positioned itself as uncompromising, bold, and ready to confront injustice head-on.
The Occasion
This year’s milestone comes as the Youth League reflects on its enduring role as the “factory of revolutionary ideas” and the preparatory school of the ANC. The ANC statement emphasized that the spirit of “young lions” continues to inspire not only political activism but also broader movements for social and economic justice.
The statement honoured past leaders while reminding the current generation of their responsibility to take forward the struggle. We are not called to peace, comfort and enjoyment, but to hard work, struggle and sweat. “We need warriors,” it read.
Community Reactions
For many South Africans, the 81st anniversary is not just a historical marker but a reminder of the sacrifices that paved the way for democracy. Community voices across social platforms praised the League’s resilience and called on young people to rise again with the same courage shown by leaders of the past.
The ANC closed its tribute by urging today’s youth to embody the fire of Anton Lembede, Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, and Walter Sisulu – leading with courage, vision, and integrity.
