The Matatiele Local Municipality, in partnership with the Department of Transport, hosted a Simulation Mock Awareness Campaign in Ward 06, Ramohlakoana, as part of its Heritage Month activities. The event showcased coordinated emergency responses and promoted road safety awareness among local communities.
What Happened
The campaign brought together emergency stakeholders, including Emergency Medical Services, Fire & Rescue, SANRAL, the Traffic Department, and RIMS (Road Incident Management System). Teams demonstrated real-world road incident scenarios in a safe and controlled setting, giving residents a closer look at how emergencies are handled.
After the exercise, a de-briefing session was held at the Old Municipal Council Chambers, where stakeholders evaluated the campaign and discussed ways to improve coordination in future incidents.
Official Response
Matatiele Local Municipality, Mayor Patrick Stuurman praised the initiative, stressing its importance ahead of the festive season.
“As we move into the busy festive season, which often comes with an increase in traffic volumes and road accidents, the presence and readiness of emergency services becomes even more critical,” said Stuurman.
The Mayor further emphasized the municipality’s ongoing commitment to road safety and the wellbeing of residents.
Community Impact
For Matatiele residents, the campaign served as both an educational exercise and a reassurance that emergency services are prepared to respond quickly. The event also reinforced partnerships between government agencies and local authorities in reducing road accidents.
The campaign ties into broader efforts to promote safety, instill responsible road use, and protect lives under the themes #ArriveAlive and #BuildingABetterMatatieleTogether.
