Walter Sisulu University’s School of Law has taken its social justice mission directly to young people through the Street Law programme. In a recent outreach, final-year Bachelor of Laws students visited Nyangilizwe Senior Secondary School, Ntaphane Junior Secondary School, Zamukulungisa High School, Efata School for the Blind and Deaf, and the Qumbu Juvenile facility. The initiative aimed to bring practical knowledge of the law to learners who are often excluded from such opportunities.
The Street Law programme is part of WSU’s broader goal of combining academic excellence with community engagement. By visiting schools and centres, the students gave young people tools to better understand their rights, responsibilities, and the role of law in everyday life.
Bachelor of Laws student Kamva Mbangata explained the importance of this effort: “The purpose of the Street Law programme is to democratise the law by breaking down its complex nature into simple, accessible terms. We want to show people that the law is not just about courtrooms, but about how it governs our daily lives, our conduct and our rights.”
The outreach reflects WSU’s ongoing dedication to making education relevant beyond the classroom while promoting inclusivity and justice in communities across the Eastern Cape.
