Two of South Africa’s oldest and most respected learning institutions, the University of Fort Hare (UFH) and Lovedale TVET College, have entered into an important partnership that promises to shape the future of education and skills in the region.
The two institutions, both situated along the Tyhume River in eDikeni (Alice), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tuesday, 26 August 2025, at the UFH Alice campus. The agreement sets out nine strategic pillars aimed at sharing resources, knowledge, and vision in areas such as academic excellence, skills development, entrepreneurship, research, and community empowerment programmes.
UFH Vice-Chancellor, Prof Sakhela Buhlungu, together with Lovedale Acting Principal, Mrs Tuletu Njengele, led the ceremony. Both leaders stressed that this partnership goes beyond a formal agreement, describing it as the continuation of a journey that began over a century ago.
“It is a historical partnership that is imposed by history itself,” said Prof Buhlungu, emphasizing how the collaboration honours the long-standing ties between the two institutions while creating new opportunities for future generations.
With the MoU now in place, Fort Hare and Lovedale TVET College have reaffirmed their shared commitment to academic progress and community upliftment through collective effort.
