On 19 August 2025, the Department of Agriculture hosted a community programme in KwaBhaca to educate school children on the importance of soil conservation. The event took place at the local community hall and was supported by Alfred Nzo District Municipality, Umzimvubu Local Municipality, the Department of Education, and social development partners.
The initiative forms part of efforts to respond to the effects of climate change. Children were taught practical ways to prevent soil erosion, while also being encouraged to plant trees and grow different types of vegetables as part of promoting sustainable living.
Participating schools included Ingwekazi Senior Secondary, Lutateni Senior Secondary, Lutateni Primary, Backerville Primary, Nkulisa Primary, Mgungundlovu Primary, and Qhukanca Primary.
The Department emphasised that small actions, such as tree planting and caring for the soil, play a key role in protecting the environment for future generations.
