The Matatiele Local Municipality has launched the New Venture and General Security Officers Programme, a new initiative designed to equip young people with practical skills, create job opportunities, and strengthen safety in the community.
Background
High youth unemployment remains a major challenge in Matatiele and across the Eastern Cape. In response, the municipality has prioritised programmes that provide training, mentorship, and pathways to employment. The new initiative is part of its long-term strategy to promote inclusive development and empower residents in every ward.
Two Streams of Training
The programme offers two main focus areas:
- New Venture training for young entrepreneurs, helping them start and sustain small businesses.
- General Security Officer (GSO) training for those interested in professional security services.
All participants will receive accredited training, hands-on experience, and mentorship. To support them during the programme, each trainee will also receive a stipend of R2000.
Community Impact
By empowering the youth, the municipality aims to create a safer and more economically active Matatiele. Graduates of the programme are expected to either establish their own enterprises or find jobs in the security industry, directly contributing to local growth and wellbeing.
Ongoing Commitment
The Matatiele Local Municipality has committed to closely monitoring the impact of the initiative and exploring ways to expand it further. Officials emphasised that the programme reflects the municipality’s vision of “leaving no one behind” in development efforts.
