- Partnership for Agricultural Skill Development: The Alfred Nzo District Municipality has collaborated with AgriSETA to launch a Potato Production Skills Development Programme aimed at empowering small-scale farmers.
- Training and Market Access for Farmers: The programme will provide practical training in potato farming and mechanisation to 500 farmers, with the top 100 receiving mechanisation support and direct market links.
- Focus on Sustainable Commercial Production: Potatoes were selected as the focus crop due to high market demand, suitable growing conditions, and the potential for profitable, sustainable farming.
A big step to help local farmers make more money, the Alfred Nzo District Municipality (ANDM) has partnered with the Agricultural Sector Education and Training Authority (AgriSETA) to launch a Potato Production Skills Development Programme. The project will train 500 small-scale farmers across the district, giving them the tools, skills, and market connections needed to grow their agricultural businesses.
The programme will offer short, practical training in potato farming techniques and agricultural mechanisation. This will not only improve farming methods but also help farmers compete in larger markets. From the 500 trainees, the top 100 performers will receive mechanisation support and direct links to buyers, helping them scale up production.
Speaking on the initiative, officials described it as a major step towards building a skilled, self-reliant farming community that can strengthen food security, create jobs, and grow the local economy. Potatoes were chosen as the focus crop due to strong market demand, favourable growing conditions in the district, and the potential for sustainable commercial production.
The Alfred Nzo District Municipality will manage recruitment in Matatiele, Umzimvubu, Mbizana, and Ntabankulu, oversee the project, monitor progress, and mobilise communities. Training will be delivered by an accredited provider, ideally linked to Potatoes South Africa.
This collaboration supports the District Development Model (DDM) and aligns with the Alfred Nzo Agri-Parks initiative, which aims to increase production, strengthen food security, reduce unemployment, and drive local economic growth.
