General Mkwanazi urges donations to SAPS Education Trust
  • Policing Service Commitment: Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkwanazi emphasizes his primary duty to serve the public as mandated by the Constitution, rather than seeking personal gains.
  • Public Fundraising Initiative: A social media-driven fundraising effort aimed to thank the police, with some contributors wishing to give Mkwanazi a car as a token of appreciation.
  • Refusal of Personal Donations: Mkwanazi clearly states that he does not accept personal donations or sponsorships, asserting that his salary from taxpayers is adequate.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkwanazi, has expressed heartfelt gratitude for the public’s show of support, but firmly declined any personal donations or sponsorships. He emphasized that his duty is to serve the people of South Africa as mandated by the Constitution, and not to benefit personally from acts of goodwill.

His comments come after a public fundraising initiative led by social media user Chris Excel, which aimed to raise money in appreciation of the work Mkwanazi and the police are doing to keep communities safe. Some contributors had hoped to buy him a car as a token of gratitude.

General Mkwanazi responded by saying he is already compensated through his monthly salary, funded by taxpayers, and that is sufficient. He instead urged that any contributions be redirected to the SAPS Education Trust (SAPSET), which supports the education of children whose parents in the police service died in the line of duty.

The SAPS Education Trust, established in 2010 and chaired by Mr. Vuyani Jarana, provides for school fees, books, uniforms, and other education-related needs. To date, 1,718 children have benefited from this initiative.

Mkwanazi reiterated that the police do not accept donations for doing their work and called on the public to continue supporting causes that benefit communities, especially children left vulnerable due to the loss of a parent in service.
