The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has strongly condemned the brutal killing of an e-hailing driver and the assault of two others on 13 August 2025 at Maponya Mall in Soweto. The party described the attack, allegedly carried out by taxi drivers, as inhumane, unlawful, and a threat to public safety.
In a statement, the MK Party criticised the growing trend of intimidation and harassment of e-hailing service providers and their passengers by members of taxi associations in Gauteng. The party noted that passengers including the elderly carrying groceries have been forcibly removed from e-hailing vehicles and pushed into taxis that do not offer the same convenience or safety.
The statement further condemned the harassment of private lift clubs and family drivers, who have also faced threats for allegedly “stealing business” from the taxi industry. The MK Party said this behaviour is not about lack of demand, as taxis remain full daily, but about monopolising transport through violence.
The party called this a clear attack on ubuntu and shared community values. It warned that if neighbours fear helping each other or families are unsafe travelling together, the fabric of society is at risk.
The MK Party extended condolences to the victims and their families and urged the South African Police Service to act quickly to arrest those responsible. The party also called on the Minister of Transport to take a firm stance and ensure safety for all transport users, including taxis, e-hailing services, and lift clubs.
