The Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA), together with Deputy Minister in the Presidency Mr Kenny Morolong (MP), will officially unveil fully digitised broadcast studios at two leading campus-based community radio stations: TUT FM 96.2 and Tshwane FM.

This milestone forms part of the MDDA’s broader effort to strengthen community media through investment in infrastructure and technology, with a strong focus on youth empowerment and multilingual content creation.

This digitisation project reflects our ongoing commitment to transforming the media landscape by equipping community radio with 21st-century tools,” said the MDDA in a statement.

Located at the Soshanguve South Campus of Tshwane University of Technology, TUT FM 96.2 reaches an audience of approximately 61,000 listeners within a 50km radius. The station broadcasts in six languages — English, Setswana, Sepedi, isiZulu, Tshivenda, and Xitsonga — and primarily targets youth aged 15 to 35.

Meanwhile, Tshwane FM, also affiliated with TUT, serves as the university’s official student radio station and broadcasts on 93.6 FM. Its signal covers a wide footprint that includes Greater Tshwane, Atteridgeville, Laudium, Mamelodi, Centurion, Midrand, and parts of northern Johannesburg.

The new digital studios will enhance content quality, expand the stations’ reach, and provide media and journalism students with hands-on experience in a professional-grade broadcasting environment.

This is more than a technical upgrade — it’s an investment in future storytellers and community voices,” noted the MDDA.
