Walter Sisulu University (WSU) brought together students, academics, and industry leaders at its East London Potsdam Campus on Tuesday, 5 August, to officially launch its first World Innovation and Intellectual Property (IP) Day.

The event took place inside the university’s newly completed engineering building, symbolising WSU’s push toward practical research, innovation, and development.

In her opening address, Prof. Nosisi Feza, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Internationalization, urged students to embrace their creative instincts. “When you’re innovative, you can’t be normal or be just like anybody else, you have to be a little bit crazy because you’re always trying to come up with clever solutions to change the world,” she said.

Feza reminded attendees that challenges often create space for opportunity, calling on students to stay alert and ready to act when those moments arise.

The celebration drew members of WSU’s executive management, researchers, external partners, and students, all aiming to spark dialogue around creativity, problem-solving, and intellectual property awareness.
