Professor Firoz Cachalia has officially taken the oath as Minister of Police during a formal ceremony held at the Union Buildings in Pretoria. The affirmation was administered by Acting Judge President A Ledwaba and presided over by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Appointed under Section 91(3)(c) of the Constitution, Professor Cachalia joins the National Executive as a Minister from outside Parliament, with a specific mandate to lead the Ministry of Police.
The swearing-in marks a key shift in the leadership of South Africa’s security cluster, as Cachalia steps into one of the country’s most demanding public service roles. A respected legal academic and former public representative, he brings experience from both the justice sector and provincial government.
President Ramaphosa, speaking at the event, expressed confidence in Cachalia’s ability to provide leadership in strengthening public safety and police accountability across the country.
Cachalia’s appointment comes at a time when national focus on crime prevention, police reform, and community trust is intensifying. As Minister of Police, he is expected to work closely with law enforcement agencies, oversight bodies, and civil society to improve safety outcomes and rebuild public confidence.
Further announcements regarding his immediate priorities in the office are expected in the coming days.
