The Eastern Cape Government is fast-tracking resettlement for families displaced by the 9–10 June 2025 storms that hit OR Tambo and Amathole districts hardest.
Relocation operations have now resumed in Mnquma and King Sabata Dalindyebo local municipalities in the Eastern Cape. While long-term housing solutions are in progress, the immediate focus is on constructing and allocating Temporary Residential Units (TRUs) in high-priority areas.
In Mnquma, 32 displaced families currently housed at Lillies Guest House and Cuba Community Hall will be the first to benefit. A relocation site has been secured at New Rest, near Butterworth. Of the 120 planned TRUs, 28 are already ready for occupation, three more will be completed tomorrow, and the rest are expected by 7 August 2025. Families will move in phases as units become available.
In King Sabata Dalindyebo, over 470 TRUs are planned, with support from the Development Bank of Southern Africa, the National Department of Human Settlements, and civil society. Land has been secured at key locations including KwaLink, Maydene Farm, and Tracor. Contractors have begun work at KwaLink, and other sites will follow suit this week.
The Eastern Cape province is engaging traditional leaders and community stakeholders to ensure inclusive planning. Spatial development processes have started to formalise these areas and secure access to essential infrastructure and services.
Alongside housing interventions, the government continues to provide three daily meals, and the South African Social Security Agency is preparing Social Relief of Distress vouchers to help families settle into their new homes.
