Opinion: South Africa Must Unite to End Gender-Based Violence

The fight against gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa demands the urgent participation of every sector of society — including law enforcement, civil society, and each of us as citizens.

GBV has become a pandemic in its own right. Our sisters are being murdered day by day, yet little is being done to stop it. A few years ago, we lost Uyinene Mrwetyana — a young woman with her whole life ahead of her. And now, heartbreakingly, we have lost Olerato Mogale under similarly tragic circumstances.

Imagine going on a date and not returning home alive. What is happening to our country? Why is the world falling apart while people watch in silence? How many more lives must be lost before we stand up and say: enough is enough?

Let us rise, South Africa. Let us fight back — not with violence, but with unity, justice, and unwavering commitment to change. Let us honour the lives lost by ensuring that no more sisters fall victim to this senseless brutality.

To the bereaved families, I offer my deepest condolences. To our sisters who are no longer with us — may your souls rest in peace. The Lord takes only the best.

Rest in power, heroines. You will never be forgotten.
