Parliament’s media office has issued a strong call for President Cyril Ramaphosa to urgently address explosive allegations made by KwaZulu‑Natal Police Commissioner Lt‑Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, warning that the claims pose a grave national security threat and demand high‑level attention.
In a media statement issued on July 6, Parliament said:
“President Ramaphosa must give answers and assure the nation that institutional integrity is supreme… silence is not an option when public trust in our security services is at stake.”
The statement follows Mkhwanazi’s dramatic briefing in Durban, during which he accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and senior SAPS leaders of colluding with a criminal syndicate—including sabotaging a police task team investigating political killings.
Parliament warned that the exchange of accusations among police leaders threatens the rule of law and could damage public confidence in state institutions. It is demanding that President Ramaphosa personally intervene and implement concrete steps to ensure transparency and accountability.
What President Ramaphosa Has Said
Speaking from the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Ramaphosa described the allegations as a matter of grave national concern and said he would address the issue with urgency upon his return to South Africa.
He emphasized:
“It is vital that the integrity of the country’s security services is safeguarded and that the rule of law is affirmed… All parties must exercise discipline and restraint.”
