SASSA confirms social grants have not been suspended, clarifying delays during the review process aimed at verifying beneficiaries’ eligibility. The agency is conducting routine assessments to verify the eligibility of certain beneficiaries who are suspected of having undisclosed income.
According to SASSA, the review process may temporarily delay payments for affected individuals until the necessary documentation is submitted and verified. However, these delays are not intended to exclude deserving beneficiaries. Instead, the reviews are aimed at ensuring that public funds are distributed to qualifying individuals only.
SASSA CEO, Themba Matlou, stated that beneficiaries are legally obligated to disclose all sources of income and to inform the agency of any changes in their financial or personal circumstances. Failure to comply may lead to corrective action under the Social Assistance Act.
Matlou emphasised that the review process helps the agency identify beneficiaries who no longer qualify due to changes in income, health status, or other legal circumstances. It also ensures that grants are not disbursed to deceased individuals or those listed on other payroll systems.
To assist with this process, SASSA is increasing capacity at its local offices and is working to introduce online self-service tools to reduce queues and improve access.
Beneficiaries undergoing review are urged to visit their nearest SASSA office with the required documents, including identification, proof of income and residence, recent bank statements, and any other documents relevant to their specific grant.
Those unable to visit an office may appoint a procurator to act on their behalf.
SASSA has warned that failure to respond to official review notices could result in delayed payments or even suspension of the grant. The agency remains committed to safeguarding public resources while ensuring support reaches those who need it most.
