The Department of Higher Education and Training has taken a major step toward bridging the digital divide, with Minister Dr. Nobuhle Pamela Nkabane officially opening the Digital Innovation Lab at Esayidi TVET College’s uMzimkhulu Campus in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday, 29 April 2025.
A Key Milestone in Digital Transformation
The new Digital Innovation Lab is part of the Department’s broader Digital Transformation Programme, aimed at equipping students with vital digital skills aligned to the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).
Speaking at the launch, Minister Nkabane highlighted the importance of practical digital education in driving South Africa’s economic future. The initiative also reflects government efforts to prepare youth for evolving job markets that demand skills like artificial intelligence, robotics, virtual reality, and coding.
Empowering Youth Through Technology
The Lab will serve as a hub where students can gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies, ensuring they are job-ready and globally competitive.
“The launch of this Innovation Lab is not only a celebration of progress but a promise to our youth,” said Minister Nkabane. “We are creating an environment where no young person is left behind in the digital economy.”
Bridging the Digital Divide
This event marks a bold step towards addressing the technological gap that still persists in many parts of South Africa, particularly in rural areas like uMzimkhulu.
