The Walter Sisulu University (WSU) community is calling for no bail to be granted to the 54-year-old residence manager who allegedly shot and killed student activist Sisonke Mbolekwa. The suspect appeared in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday following his arrest over the Easter weekend.
The emotional scene outside the courtroom was marked by heartbreak as Mbolekwa’s mother wept uncontrollably, her cries echoing the pain of unanswered questions and a community in mourning.
The third-year student was allegedly gunned down during a protest over poor living conditions in one of the university’s residences. Students say Mbolekwa had been vocal about the deteriorating state of the facilities and was advocating for change when he was killed.
“He was fighting for all of us,” said one student, holding a placard that read ‘Justice for Sisonke. No Bail!’
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Gantana, the accused faces charges of murder and attempted murder. Gantana confirmed that while the arrest marked a significant step, the investigation remains ongoing and details are being withheld to protect its integrity.
In court, the suspect confirmed his intention to apply for bail. The case was postponed to 2 May 2025 for a formal bail application.
Meanwhile, tensions remain high on campus. Some have attempted to shift blame to the students, accusing them of escalating the situation. But many continue to protest peacefully, insisting that the focus should remain on accountability and justice.
In a show of unity and spiritual support, Thembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo visited the university this week, calling for calm and the restoration of peace and dignity at WSU.
